The National Executive Council (NEC) in National Gazette No. G772 of 27 November, 2018, appointed Ken Fairweather as the Chairman of the Manam Resettlement Authority Board. This is exactly 14 years since the first major evacuation of 9000 people started on 27 November, 2004.
Ken Fairweather, CBE, is the former Member of Parliament (MP) representing Sumkar Open Electorate in Madang Province in the 8th and 9th Parliament (2007 – 2017). He is also a successful businessman.
Ken has lived in PNG for 48 years. Born in Melbourne and coming to PNG as a young man. He has lived and worked in all regions of PNG.
Ken is a keen student of PNG and closely worked with Highland societies. He served Sumkar (Sumgilbar and Karkar) as elected MP for 10 years. He has been Chairman of the Copra Marketing Board (now Kokonas Indastri Koperesen “KIK”) and Deputy Chairman of Privatisation Committee (now Independent Public Business Corporation).
He is well-known for taking forthright positions on subjects on political, cultural and is a devotee of private enterprise. He has many business interests throughout PNG.
Ken is known as a man with strong views and a has a very “colourful” way of speaking. Leaving everyone in no doubt what he thinks. He makes quick decisions.
His great strength is his personal contacts at all levels of society. He is fiercely loyal to those who work for him; but expects “good work for good pay”.
